A menudo considerado como el primer intérprete de banjo del mundo, Bela Fleck prácticamente ha reinventado la imagen y el sonido del banjo en una extraordinaria carrera como intérprete - tanto en vivo como en estudio - que lo ha llevado por todo el mapa musical, tanto con The Flecktones como en una amplia gama de proyectos en solitario y colaboraciones.

Es uno de los grandes innovadores de la música contemporánea, el hombre que sacó el banjo del tradicional estilo bluegrass para incursionar en el mundo del jazz.

Desde los inicios de su carrera, siempre buscó juntarse con músicos que tocaran sus instrumentos en formas poco usuales.

Fue así como encontró a los "Flecktones" :
Victor Wooten en el bajo (considerado como uno de los mejores del mundo),
Jeff Coffin en el saxofón, clarinete y flauta, y
Future Man (hermano de Victor) en el synth-ax drumitar (un modelo de batería electrónica diseñada por él mismo, que se toca como si fuera una guitarra), batería acústica y percusión.

Otro de los detalles interesantes de esta agrupación, incluyendo a los músicos invitados, es la experimentación con efectos digitales, sobre todo en instrumentos de viento, logrando así, por ejemplo, que un fagot suene como sintetizador.

También el líder de la banda recurre a los avances tecnológicos, utilizando en ocasiones un banjo eléctrico, el cual suena muy parecido a una guitarra, pero por las notorias diferencias técnicas, le da un toque muy distinto a los requintos.

Su actuación en la Argentina

En nuestro país han sido ignorados casi por completo.
El único CD editado en la Argentina (y a caballo de su visita) es el último, The Hidden Land.

El teatro estaba colmado(3.000 personas).El clima previo era de fiesta absoluta, fervor inusitado, cierta emoción, incredulidad en algunos, curiosidad en muchos otros.
A las 21:45 hs., las luces que se apagan, la audiencia que estalla como si se tratara de un recital de una banda famosa de rock.

Con un sonido potentísimo, los Flecktones salieron a matar de entrada con The Next (de Little Worlds, 2003), que incluyó un primer solo de Wooten, una sólida intervención de Cofffin en saxo tenor, el buen gusto de Béla Fleck y la versatilidad inaudita de Future Man con su extraño aparato.

Y si el comienzo fue alentador, con la intro que el bajista (con acompañamiento de palmas incluido) hizo en Throedown At the Hoedown (de Left Of Cool, 1998), el público se rindió totalmente. Hay un pasaje de preguntas y respuestas entre Wooten y Fleck en el que intercalan piezas clásicas con buen gusto y precisión. Mientras tanto, Future Man hace percusión.. con la boca.

Realmente el concierto fue inolvidable.

Bela Fleck & the Flecktones han demostrado por qué muchos los consideran como una de las mejores bandas para presenciar en vivo.
Se divierten tocando... y contagian.

Con The Flecktones ganó su quinto Grammy en 2000 (mejor álbum de jazz contemporáneo) por "Outbound", un proyecto de amplia cobertura
- con artistas invitados que incluyen al guitarrista Adrian Belew y cantantes como Jon Anderson y Shawn Colvin -
construido alrededor del concepto musical de Fleck.

After a decade with Warner Bros., Béla Fleck jumped to Sony's Columbia Records, signing a five-record deal that called for two releases on Sony Classical, a solo album, and two discs with his band the Flecktones of which Outbound is the first.
It is a typically eclectic effort. For example, the Fleck original "Shuba Yatra" (its title, he explains in the press materials, "is an Indian term that means taking a journey with a safe return") features a tabla player and Fleck on a "sitar banjo," an electrified instrument with a banjo head and a sitar bridge.

Such instruments give the tune something of an Indian flavor, except that much of it is borrowed from traditional Irish music with a touch of South African rhythm. Such odd juxtapositions of instrumentation and style are typical not only from track to track but also within tracks.

Fleck and his band mates seem to view all styles of music as readily and randomly interchangeable, but sometimes, as with a colorblind person picking out clothes, the results clash or otherwise disturb, and the rest of the time they come off as flashy and insubstantial.
Fleck really offers no defense to the charge of being a musical dilettante, he simply celebrates the surface pleasures of different varieties of music, offering an overlapping series of appetizers. A fan of any particular style is liable to feel that it has been trivialized, but Fleck doesn't mean any harm.

His music represents the pursuit of facileness as a musical goal, one that he and his band achieve with alacrity.
